World We Imagine Part 1

After reading the quote by Novogratz and thinking about what my first step in making the world a better place might be, I immediately thought about the volunteer work I have done for the organization Habitat for Humanity. Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit organization that builds affordable housing for underprivileged households in the greater Los Angeles area. I did volunteer work for the organization throughout high school by helping construct houses. I was drawn to Habitat for Humanity as I plan to purchase and develop real estate when I am older and this organization does exactly this in a charitable way. However, since going to college, I haven’t worked with the organization at all. But after reading this quote and being assigned this project, it has once again sparked my interest in volunteering for the organization.

That’s why my first step in making the world a better place would be to volunteer for Habitat for Humanity. This would start by giving my “sweat equity” to the organization by helping build homes from the ground up and also spreading the word of the organization to my family, friends, and peers. Furthermore, as I volunteer more and more, I could move up the ranks of the organization and start helping them out by raising money to fund future projects. Going even further, as I make my way as a real estate developer in my own life, I can provide guidance to the organization and serve as a board member, while also hopefully being able to donate the money that I make being a developer. Of course, the latter things are a part of a bigger dream, but my first step in making the world a better place would be to be a volunteer for Habitat for Humanity.

  1. Hi Elan!

I feel like housing is such a big issue especially in bigger cities like LA. Because these cities were designed around the highways (which were built with exclusionary intent), the housing supply often does not meet the demand, causes prices to soar. I think focusing on the housing issue is a very noble cause and I think that you can maybe even expand future goals to be things like changing the infrastructure. As the population continues to grow, changes need to be made in order to make our cities more accessible to the people.

  2. Hello Elan,

Access to shelter is an extremely important issue for a lot of people so I think it's a great focus to begin making the world a better place. Shelter security for everyone would definitely make the world a better place and it's awesome that you are thinking about volunteering with Habitat for Humanity again. I guess another step could be to think of ways in which Habitat for Humanity could be more effective or could increase visibility to attract more volunteers in solving the shelter crisis.

  3. Hi Elan,

I love that you focused on affordable housing and that this project refreshed your interest in volunteering for Habitat for Humanity. I'm familiar with their Restores and have always been interested in the building-side of their work. Affordable housing and housing in general is something I think about a lot, especially being from LA. Housing/shelter is a basic need of life, yet so many people still don't have access to it. It was also cool to read how you see this work intersecting with your career goals in real estate development. I think your education in real estate could really help the organization maximize its funding and impact in communities in need. I think this is a great place to start building a better world.

  4. Hello Elan,

Thank you for sharing your insight on how you would make the world a better place. Being from around the Los Angeles area, I have also heard about Habitat for Humanity. I think that it's a great idea to start with this issue. I believe that for the world the truly become a better place, we need to start with equity and focus on major issues and then work up from there. This project would allow for many of those who are currently homeless and forgot about to have a place to restart and build on their lives.
